OAKLAND, CA — Today, California Environmental Voters (EnviroVoters) released the following statement in response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s release of the May Revision.

Statement from Mary Creasman, Chief Executive Officer, California Environmental Voters:

“Our state’s budget process is a necessary tool in protecting Californians now and in the future, especially for frontline communities. Climate action is a priority that must be reflected in our state’s budget this year and every year through investments in clean transportation, clean energy, building decarbonization, and community resilience.

We cannot afford to backslide on our commitment to invest in climate action and environmental protection when our future is at stake. This is a question of whether our state leaders are willing to end corporate handouts to protect communities from extreme heat, flooding, pollution, extreme wildfires, and drought. We can preserve the climate budget by cutting subsidies for the oil and gas industries and ending corporate handouts, similar to the Senate’s budget proposal to restore corporate taxes. The money is there, especially when oil companies have raked in record profits from price-gouging and profiteering this year.

Our big challenge is funding the transition to clean energy and resilient infrastructure. California needs additional sources of revenue to fund climate programs to meet our state’s climate goals. Time is not on our side. This decade is our last chance to protect Californians from catastrophe and ensure a safe and healthy future for all.”

California Environmental Voters (formerly the California League of Conservation Voters) believes the climate crisis is here and this moment requires transformative change. California has the policy solutions to stop climate change but lacks the political will to do it at the rate and scale that’s necessary. EnviroVoters exists to build the political power to solve the climate crisis, advance justice, and create a roadmap for global action. We organize voters, elect and train candidates, and hold lawmakers accountable for bold policy change. We won’t stop until we have resilient, healthy, thriving communities, and a democracy and economy that is just and sustainable for all.
