Join us in Sacramento for Ivory Ban Hearing

This Tuesday, March 10, your presence can make a big difference in the fight for elephants’ lives.

We invite you to join us at the California State Capitol at 9:30 AM, in Room 4202, and stand with us in support of Speaker Toni Atkin’s and co-author Senator Ricardo Lara’s bill to ban the ivory trade, AB 96, at its very first hearing in the Assembly.

Speaker Atkins and Senator Lara chose the bill number AB 96 to remind their colleagues that, on average, 96 African elephants are slaughtered for their ivory every single day. Poachers hunt down and gruesomely slaughter elephants for their ivory with astounding disregard for the laws meant to protect them, let alone the horror and suffering they inflict on the animals. The poachers then sell the ivory to traders, and traders move this ivory through illegal deals that lead to store shelves right here in California.

Closing off the California market will reduce the value of illegal ivory, and passing AB 96 will do just that. Help us show lawmakers that Californians care deeply about this issue: Come join us tomorrow morning at the Capitol to attend the bill’s very first hearing by the Assembly Committee on Water, Parks and Wildlife.

Please confirm your attendance by RSVPing on this Facebook event. If you aren’t personally able to attend, you can still spread the word — please share this information widely (particularly with Sacramento-area friends and family).

Everyone who attends the hearing will have an opportunity to come to the microphone to state your name, organizational affiliation (if any) and city. There is no need to sign up in advance or fill out a card of any kind.

One more thing… we learned this week that the powerful National Rifle Association (NRA) is opposing AB 96, making it even more important to pack the hearing room with supporters of ending the ivory trade in California.

Thank you for helping us build support to pass this important bill. Together, we can finally stop the ivory trade in California and help bring an end to the elephant slaughter.
